PROGRAM MEETING

MONDAY NIGHT WAS OUR PROGRAM MEETING.  AFTER DINNER, WE NORMALLY HAVE A GUEST SPEAKER FROM THE AREA.  OUR GUEST SPEAKER THIS NIGHT WAS KARA ROY.

 

 

KARA IS A SIGN LANGUAGE INSTRUCTOR AT LAKELAND COMMUNITY COLLEGE IN WILLOUGHBY, OHIO.  SHE TEACHES CREDIT AND NON-CREDIT COURSES. 

 

OUR PRESIDENT KAREN HAS HAD THE HONOR OF TAKING ONE OF HER CLASSES.  THEY ARE ALSO CO-WORKERS TOGETHER AT GANDER MT. IN MENTOR.  KAREN INTRODUCED KARA TO OUR CLUB.

 

KARA DESCRIBED TO US HOW TO INTERACT WITH THE DEAF COMMUNITY.  HOW TO HELP THEM OUT IN DIFFERENT SITUATIONS.  SHE MADE US STOP AND THINK ABOUT ALL THE SMALL THINGS WE MAY TAKE FOR GRANTED THAT ARE DIFFICULT FOR SOMEONE THAT IS DEAF.  FOR EXAMPLE, ALARM CLOCKS, PHONES, INTERCOMS, AND OVERHEAD ANNOUNCEMENT.  THE MOST DIFFICULT IS HOW TO COMMUNICATE IN THE DARK IF THEY CANNOT SEE YOUR HANDS OR READ YOUR LIPS.

 

 

SEE KARA WAS BORN DEAF.  SHE HAS A BROTHER THAT IS DEAF TOO.  THEY WERE DIAGNOSED AS UNEXPLAINABLE, BECAUSE THEY WERE NOT SICK AND REALLY DO NOT HAVE A FAMILY HISTORY OF HEARING ISSUES.  KARA HELPED US TO UNDERSTAND THAT NOT EVERY DEAF PERSON READS LIPS OR CAN SPEAK.  SOME MAY NOT KNOW HOW TO SIGN DEPENDING ON THEIR SCHOOLING. ALSO DO NOT ASSUME THAT ALL THAT READ LIPS CAN READ EVERYONE'S LIPS.  WE ALL HAVE DIFFERENT WAYS OF TALKING AND ACCENTS.  THIS CAN MAKE SOME PEOPLE MORE DIFFICULT TO READ.

 

ON A MORE HUMOROUS SIDE SHE DID SHARE HER DISLIKE OF AIRPORTS WITH US.  SHE CANNOT HEAR THE ANNOUNCEMENTS AND HAS RUN INTO SOME STICKY SITUATIONS

 

WE THANK KARA FOR TAKING THE TIME TO COME AND TALK WITH US AND HELP US TO BETTER UNDERSTAND THE DEAF WORLD.

 

 



WELCOME NEW MEMBERS!!!

We want to welcome 2 new members to our club!

 

 

Monday night at our meeting we were honored to have our Governor, Lt. Governor, Secretary/Treasurer and past Governor as guests at our meeting.

We heard news from Gov. Joan about what is happening through out our District, and a recap from our International Convention, held in Hawaii.  We discussed media and junior clubs with Lt. Gov. Kay.

Our Past Governor, Dawn, then Installed our 2 new members.  We welcome Geri and Chris to the club.  Chris could not be with us, so Kay stood in for her.

 

 

 

Dawn read a small personal bio on each new member and presented them with their pins.  They were also given a rose , welcome packet and small gift from our club.

 

We welcome Chris and Geri and look forward to many years of working together with both of you.  We hope you find being members of our club fun and rewarding!

 

 

 

 

 

QUATER AUCTION 2012

Today we held our 2nd annual Quarter Auction.  It was such a great time.  The money we raise from this event helps to send a child with special needs to a summer camp.  This past summer we sent an autistic boy to special camp for children with autism.

MEETING CHANGES!

Great way to meet others and have lasting friendships

 

Our meetings are held at DINO's Restaurant on Rt. 306 in Willoughby/Mentor Ohio.

We meet at 6pm on the 2nd and 4th Monday of most months.  We enjoy dinner and friendly conversations.  At around 7pm we begin our meeting with either bussiness or a program.

 

Dino's has be ever so gracious to offer us a special deal of $12 per person per our prearranged dinner.  Due to rising costs in food and overhead and our membership changes, We will now order off the menu and each person will take care of their own check.

 

Everyone is welcome to attend dinner and the meeting.  Come for dinner to get to know us, or just come for the meeting to find out what we are all about!  Just RSVP the Saturday before a meeting.  (see club or Karen's phone no. to the right).  RSVP's will help us ensure we have enough seats!

Mentor a Junior club...the Junior Q's

 

Junior Q's at it again!

Our Junior Q's participated in a 24 hour pet adoption hosted by Petsmart in Mentor. The adoption ran 9am Saturday thru 9am Sunday.  There were 2 groups there to provide the pets to be adopted.  There were dogs and puppies, cats and kittens of all sizes, colors and ages.

Our Q's were there to help assist with walking dogs, petting cats and giving them some love.  They also kept them watered and fed.  Of course there is also the chore of cleaning out the cages too.

The goal was to reach 100 animals finding new homes by 9am on Sunday.  At 9pm on Saturday night a total of 93 animals had been placed in new homes.  It is so sad to see these dogs and cats just looking for someone to give them love.  It is so wonderful to see the look on someones face when they find their new friend and see the instant love between owner and pet!

The kids had a blast, they did not make all 24 hours, but put in a good 13 1/2 hours of their time helping the ARC.  They plan to help with another adoption coming up in a few weeks and want to help volunteer at the rescue center once a month.

CONFERENCE (blog from Karen, our president)

Well, I am back from conference.  Our Lt. Gov., Kay and I went to Hawaii for our International Conference, which is held every two years.  This year it was in  Hawaii. Yes, Hawaii!  This was my first International Conference.  I was excited and nervous.

I asked my mother to go with me as a guest.  This was a chance of a lifetime for her and she had a blast. She did all kinds of sight seeing  while I attend our meetings.

 This was an important conference, as we had several changes to discuss and vote on.  Changes to help streamline our organization and help move it into the future.  These changes are necessary for our organization, as with any organization, needs to make in today's world.  Times are moving so fast we need to change to keep up.  We also installed our new Board of Directors.

We did get some time for play:

The husbands of our Directors dressed up and a contest was held to raise money for the We Share Foundation. 

We went as a group to a luau.  We were treated to a lot of great food and dancing. There were also tours set up to see Pearl Harbor, sailing, and other performances.

Everyone that went to Pearl Harbor came back touched and humbled.  I missed this tour due to flight problems, but I was able to reschedule mom.  She came back in tears.

Well, everyone had a great time and our next conference in 2014 will be held in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Summer Time

We do slow down for the summer.  Our picnic is our last get together till the end of August.

We hope you have a safe and wondeful summer.  You can find us at the Painesville Party in the Park.  The festival is July 20-22 this year.  Stop by our tent and say HI!
